Painting Skorne #18: Almost done!

I was pretty sick the last week and a half, and since I was unable to do anything that involved getting up out of my chair/couch/bed. On the other hand I have always been unable to just lie down and do nothing, so I just set up my painting stuff and did some relaxed painting.

The result is pretty nice, I painted up a Krea, a Drake, the Swamp Gobbers and the mighty Maximus.

The Gobbers and Maximus are some really nice models, I really enjoyed painting those up.

Only one model remains before I can claim to have a fully painted up list pairing for Skorne, and I’m super happy with that. Hopefully I can show off that Willbreaker soon.

The effect on the sword is rather underwhelming on these pictures, I’ll see if I can make some with daylight soon, that may show the effects as they are in the flesh.

Painting Skorne #17: This is my fist, there are many like it, but this one is mine

I finished the last 4 models I required to have a fully painted 50 point list for pXerxis (Fist of Halaak theme force)

The next goals is to have my second list fully painted up, and I’m almost there, just need to paint another 5 models.

Models left: Krea, Willbreaker, Maximus, Gobbers crew.

I’m just struggling a bit on how Im going to approach the skintones for the krea and the gobbers. So that’ll be a small experiment.

Here are some pictures of the ffist on display:

No game experiences to report for the last week as I have been sick at home, and sadly even making this post is making me tired, so hopefully I get better in a few days. If I’m all healed up by Thursday I’ll have 2 days of battles to report on afterwards.

Some Variation required

Currently I have 1 game night each week, on Friday. And sometimes I get to 2 games, however most nights 1 game is all I can squeeze in.

This has a large impact on my learning curve. I play a game, make some misplays, draw some conclusions on how I should play things out next time and then my army goes into my bag for an entire week.

The best way to learn things in a constructive manner is by playing several games (I would say a minimum of 2) each time, so things learned in game 1 can be applied in game 2. This is also why playing in a tournament yields more experience than playing on regular game nights.

I am planning to squeeze in an additional game night when possible on Thursdays. This will give me more games each week and since my 2 game nights will be Thursday and Friday, I can apply my experiences from Thursday during my games on Friday. It won’t be the same as playing 3-4 games in a row like I would at an event, but it will be close enough.

The other change I will make, is mixing up the gameplay by taking Cryx off the shelves from time to time. I recently got more interested in my old faction again, and while I’m not thinking about switching back, I am considering dividing my time over the 2 factions.

For Skorne, my interest outside of Mordrikaar / Xerxis is limited, I see myself give Xerxis2 and Zaal a try, but at this point that’s about it. Now I love Fist and Mordrikaar so there’s no bad side to only playing those, except for it getting pretty boring if you do it over and over and…

The last few days I have discovered my interest in Cryx has returned, this provides a certain solution to my problem. I like most casters in Cryx and you can mix and match units/solo’s/jacks/casters pretty easy, so a fun list or 2 isn’t hard to assemble.

I won’t be switching to Cryx, what I will do is mix things up, going from Skorne to Cryx and back for game nights and events.

This should provide me with a broader view for my gameplay. And at this point I need to figure out some way to grow and to avoid stagnating. My gameplay is far from where I want it to be and mixing things up could be what I need to open up a fresh can of ideas.

My first stops on the Cryx trip will be Goreshade 3 and Mortenebra. G3 because I really want to take him for a spin and Morty because she’s number 1 in my book when fun is concerned.

I did set some goals before I can touch any Cryx models again. First my painting for my 2 50 Skorne lists has to be finished. (2 Incendiarii, 2 Arcuarii, krea, gobbers, willbreaker and Maximus to go) The Incendiarii and Arcuarii are halfway done and the other models will take about a week maybe 2 to get done so not to terrible for planning.

That’s all for now. I hope to get a painting update out this week, it will depend on how much time I can spend painting…

Skorne painting #16: Archidon

The Archidon is finished!

I used the model to test how I was going to go about the orange, and then pretty much left it at that. Having it just sitting on my desk unfinished was getting sad, so I decided to finish it. Also it’ll fit right into my eXerxis list so it needs to be finished sooner or later anyhow.

2015 Tournament report #1: First Blood Antwerp

The first SR tournament of the year in Belgium was First blood in Antwerp.

There were 4 rounds in total, and I went 2/2.

I took my trusty Xerxis1 Fist of Halaak and Mordrikaar lists.

Round #1

List played: Xerxis1 // vs: Convergence, Mother //  Scenario: Outflank

I guess I had a leg up in this game, having played Convergence, and facing a list similar to what I playtested in the past.

The player was Peter Gaublomme (Maudlin).

His list was:

System: Warmachine
Faction: Convergence of Cyriss
Casters: 1/1
Points: 50/50
Iron Mother Directrix & Exponent Servitors (*4pts)
* Corollary (3pts)
* Assimilator (8pts)
* Prime Axiom (19pts)
Optifex Directive (Leader and 2 Grunts) (2pts)
Reductors (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
Reductors (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
Attunement Servitors (2pts)
Enigma Foundry (3pts)
Enigma Foundry (3pts)
Steelsoul Protector (2pts)

The real problem I saw from the start were the 2 drag shots from the Axiom. So when looking at the table I saw that one side had a house in between the 2 zone’s I figured it would keep the axiom from advancing in between the zone’s and limit it’s area of operation.

Turns out this was a very good guess. The first few turns, the axiom wasn’t in range of Tibbers so no charging and wrecking it.  So I used Tibbers as an anchor point placing  the gladiator and cetratii in such a way non could be dragged.

At the same time I had some Arcuarii on the hill, hoping he would focus his range effort on them and also kinda hoping def 14 on a hill would limit the possibility of actually hitting.

Starting turn 2 I was able to fire volleys into both unit’s of Reductors, each time removing more than could be returned by a foundry. It turned out that those sprays had hurting potential vs my troops so limiting their numbers from the start was a solid choice.

Scenario play wasn’t a thing in this match, and so I put my focus into the game of chicken between axiom and Tiberion. I also kept a close eye on how far forward Mother was all the time.

In turn 3 or 4 (absolutly no idea if we played 3 or 4 turns really but it doesn’t matter) the axiom moved up towards the zone, and I saw a nice angle for Tibbers. A Steelsoul Protector was places in between the 2 meaning it had to go or the option was off the table. 2 Cetratii were in front of Tibbers so they had to move aside as well

I activated xerxis, moved him up behind the ceratii and used my 2 initials to remove the steelsoul protector.

At this point another much more interesting option aside from totaling the Asxiom. Mother was on the opposite side of the house. I had measured xerxis control before to make an estimate if the cetratii next to Tibbers could move to the right and stay in command. So I knew how far Mother was away.

Xerxis provided the Cetratii with 2″ extra movement (battleplan), they chose to do a shield wall order, move their 7 inches and surrounded mother. 2 Combine attacks later the game was over.

Round #2

List played: Xerxis1 // vs: Khador, Sorcha1 //  Scenario: Supply and Demand

I feel slightly embaressed because I don’t remember the other player’s name, had a great time playing againt him.

His list was:

System: Warmachine
Faction: Khador
Casters: 1/1
Points: 50/50
Kommander Sorscha (*5pts)
* Juggernaut (7pts)
* Kodiak (8pts)
* War dog (1pts)
Greylord Ternion (Leader and 2 Grunts) (4pts)
Man-o-war Demolition Corps (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)
Man-o-war Shocktroopers (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)
Widowmakers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (4pts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* 2 Winter Guard Infantry Rocketeers (2pts)
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios (3pts)
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich (2pts)

The game started out pretty great, I opted to go second and choose the better table edge. On the second turn a unit of arcuarii and a unit of incendiarii, managed to remove 3 models from the Demolition Corps.  The rest was to far out and I just moved up.

The just moving up is where I made the most crucial mistake on turn2. My opponant destroyed the objective, and feated. My Cetratii were lined up 2″ maybe slightly less from the edge of the zone. Sorcha feat meant, stationary, mean 2 turns of domination for Sorcha and nothing that I could run into the zone. Beasts couldn’t get around the Cetratii and I wasn’t going to put Xerxis in front of his army…loss on scenario 5/0.

This was maybe my second game vs Sorcha1, could even have been my first, our local Khador player is crazy in love with Zerkova, old Witch, Butcher3, even VLad, but he doesn’t field Sorcha.

The logical plan now is to ask the Khador player to bring Sorcha out a few times just to get some more practice games in.

Round #3

List played: Mordrikaar // vs: Minions, Rask //  Scenario: Incursion

I finally got to play against Christoph and his awsome looking crocs. We see each other at events all the time and we have never met on the tabletop before.

I was in a pinch when I had to choose my list. I hadn’t had the chance to drop my Mordrikaar list and after my previous loss, the chances of meeting a Cryx player were slim to none (4 players but Cryx was winning games).

This made me decide to go for my mordrikaar list. Also, he wouldn’t have had much trouble removing my armor/multi wound models if I had dropped Xerxis, and I had sort of a plan with Mordrikaar.

The Fist drop would still have been more in my advantage, but then I was locked in Mordrikaar and that would be a problem.

His list:

Casters: 1/1
Points: 50/50
Rask (*6pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)
* Blackhide Wrastler (9pts)
* Swamp Horror (8pts)
Gatormen Posse (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)
Gatormen Posse (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)
Gatormen Posse (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)

He also played the new gatorman battle engine (unreleased but we allow it because he made a really nice proxy model and it’s out in the book anyhow)

The plan from the start was to halt the lists advance and dismantle it as much as I could. Pow 10’s would make that hard, however spikes exist and recursion is strong with Mordrikaar.

Halting the advance worked. After we knew which flag would leave the table I made sure one of my void spirits was within 4″ of the other side flag on the table edge side.

This way I pretty much took scenario play off the table. There were 2 models who could do something to that void spirit, Rask and the battle engine. Both weren’t going to shift so drastically, so it was a safe bet.

His Wrastler charged my Bronzeback after he pushed the Wrastler forward using his Swamp Horror (prett brilliant move considering he needed just that to reach it) and handing out the reach animus. Sadly for him the wrastler didn’t finish the job so I responded by letting the Bronzeback remove the Wrastler from the table.

He removed the brozeback after with gatormen.

No more bronzeback made an assassination pretty impossible. I kept him busy with both my tough units and made some nice plays with the revive to counter admonition. In the end 2 beasts left and ample transfers made an assassination impossible, and the number of grunts removed from each unit growing was getting bigger and bigger on my end. Revive prolongs things but it’s not a super recursion system either. Failing to remove enough crocs was what kept me away from having the upper hand.

I lost on deathclock in the end.

Really nice game and I’m super happy that I finally got a chance to play vs Christoph.

Round #4

List played: Xerxis1 // vs: Skorne, Hexeris2 //  Scenario: Proces of Elimination

The last game of the day (and we were all getting tired ^^). I played against the other player named Peter.  It was fun getting the Skorne pairing, specially because his lists were very different from mine.

He played pretty beast heavy in both his lists where I play infantry heavy in both.

His list:

System: Hordes
Faction: Skorne
Casters: 1/1
Points: 50/50
Lord Arbiter Hexeris (*6pts)
* Basilisk Krea (4pts)
* Cyclops Brute (5pts)
* Cyclops Brute (5pts)
* Cyclops Shaman (5pts)
* Tiberion (11pts)
* Titan Gladiator (8pts)
* Aptimus Marketh (3pts)
Nihilators (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
Paingiver Beast Handlers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (3pts)
Agonizer (2pts)
Extoler Soulward (2pts)

Since my Mordrikaar drop in the previous game was made in order to keep Xerxis open as a drop for the last round, I chose tomake use of it.

Playing against a beast heavy list was pretty much uncharted territory for me, with  Skorne, and in general. I can’t remember if I ever faced a list with this many beasts (this includes all my games with Ret, Cryx and convergence).

I won the roll off and decided that this time I wanted to go first, the reason was that the table was pretty even on both ends and I didn’t mind deploying on either side. And my deployment wasn’t going to change much no matter how he deployed (well there’s certain exterme situations but hey…). So yea, the only benifit was first turn move in such a way the other player had to account for my movement and see where we ended up.

I cleaned up 4 maybe 5 nihilators pretty fast, in the left zone, on the right I had more models than my opponent (who just sent a Brute to make sure the zone wouldn’t be at rist any time soon. I did the standart move Cetratii up 7″ in shield wall move, with Tibbers and the gladiator following close behind.

My opponent destroyed the objective in the left zone using his own Tibbers. I responded the turn after by having my tibbers wrech his. The same thing happened afterwards with the gladiators, his tired to doublehanded throw mine, mine rolled a 6 on 1 die he rolled a 6 on 2 die and so my Gladiator won the muscle flew off and the turn after my Gladiator wrecked his.

In the end one model kept me from scoring 5 points, a brute, with 1 silly health box left…

I commited all I had in the zone to get it removed, it just didn’t want to die (my rolls were sad, just sad)

My opponent and I had both destroyed an objective (&-&) and he then dominated the left zone one turn (1-3), now he had moved to the other zone with his caster. I moved more and more stuff in the way while hoping to remove that brute.

After the last ditch attempt to clear the zone of my models  (2 beast handlers proudly holding the front ^^) he now had his casters back turned to my gladiator.

I cleared the left zone (so I would still get the dominate points) and then charged the gladiator on Hexeris, boosting to hit because even in the back I didn’t want to miss)

He had already cut himself quite a few times, so the job isn’t that hard, he has no transfers left, thats a plus, so one big his was all I wanted. Hence boosting is better logic on that one.

So I hit and straight up killed the caster.

Really fun game, verry nice and friendly opponent, we were both getting tired and were happy that concluded a ful day of warmahordes 😀

I snapped some pics of the last game, while the other player was thinking over his move:

Just for information, the large base marker with the fury tokens on top represtents Tibbers, he had the Skorne issue of not fitting where he wanted to be so proxy base and all…

Well that was it, hope it was a good read and I hope to have something new to post soon.

Skorne painting #14: void spirits and Keltarii

I have been behind in posting my painted models. I finished my void spirits 2 weeks ago and the keltarii were done yestarday.

Void spirits:

Keltarii:

The keltarii were a rush job as I couldn’t paint them on their bases (easy acchess to everything is a big thin) and I need them tommorow for the first SR event of the year.

Still if I don’t look at them up close in detail they don’t stand out to much from the rest of my painted models, so no real loss there.

Next up are the Flayer weapon crews I have spent so much time talking about, now that I know I’m going to play them, I have to have them painted up ofc 😀

Steam Roller 2015 and list building #2: correction and dojo

It would seem I have made a mistake regarding the SR 2015 scenario’s.

Instead of 6 there are 8. Lucky for me that further “math” regarding objective in scenario’s stays about the same. 5 out of the 8 scenarios have objectives and there is still only one scenario where the objective is placed to far up the field to make the bonus count.

So 4/8 scenarios have the potential to make the light artillery bonus work. Like before that’s only half. Even if such a scenario comes up, there’s still a chance you opponent plays a list/ faction that requires you to take list number 2.

I was unaware that there was a special rule concerning “weapons crew” and this is actually the key element that makes the light artillery worth thinking about.

Yes the objective bonus is sweet, and yes it won’t be around most of the games you play at an event (unless you luck out and all 3-4 rounds have a scenario with an objective, then again the opposite could also be true…).

So just looking at the bonus and the scenario spread I wouldn’t be convinced. The element that bothered me most was the large base on the leader model. The martial Discipline rule on pXerxis is bread and butter for the theme force, and adding more large based models to the list (the rule only applies to medium and small bases) would make it less easy for the other models to go from point A to B.

The Weapons crew rule makes it so that even if the leader model has a large base, it should be considered a small based model, meaning that it does fall within the effects of martial discipline.

Suddenly line of sight issues are nog longer a problem, the movement restrictions aren’t either.

This changes nothing about the conclusion for the catapult for Skorne, but it opens up the option of taking the flayer cannon. Since LOS issues were the main reason for me to steer away from the flayer cannon,I’m out of arguments for not including it…

Where the catapult has to stay back a bit because if it follows the fron line models to closly it will end up with it’s targets within 8 inches, this is actually something the flayer cannon wouldn’t mind at all. boosted flayer shots followed by Tiberion or a weapon master unit moving in sounds good to me, even outside of the feat turn.

The flayer gun also doesn’t suffer from the inacurate rule making it more reliable to hit things and ofc it potentially has more shots (D3 shots does make it dice dependant, but at least with 2 crews you get 2 shots for sure).

Sunday’s event will still be using the SR2014 as the 2015 version won’t be officially out by then so I’ll play my Fist list in it’s original form. For the next event I will change it up and add the flayers. Expect an report on the games I play and since I need to finish some models in order to be able to play my Mordrikaar list, there will be a painting update soon as well.

For now Happy new year and a big thank you to all those who made the effort to visit my blog, December was an amazin month, 274 visitors, a new record, previously the best month was 184 visitors, so this is quite a step up.

As for me I’m the guy who chose new year’s eve to be sick and I had to stay home, the silver lining is that I did get to make this post ^^
